HO Model Railroad Layout

This is a 5x8 HO scale layout called Granite Gorge and Northern from an old Atlas layout book. I began this eight years ago and the only thing that is not finished is the scenery. Two main lines run at the same time on this wonderful layout. This includes all nickel-silver track with 11 power selector switches and 12 turn switches. All are automatic. It includes two power supplies which are a Sound and Power 7000 and a Tech 3 Power Command 9000. The former makes real diesel and steam locomotive sounds. There are over 25 cars included (see photos). Two are the locomotives. One is a Athearn Union Pacific diesel and the other is a Bachman Southern Pacific steam. Both locomotives run as new.

This layout uses a "deformed plywood top" rather than a plain "flat top" so that the track has a gentle grade as though it is traveling up and down a mountain. A river even runs down the center of it! It took many hours cutting all the grid work under the plywood. It rests on six legs which are attached with bolts and wing nuts. It can easily be dissasembled and either put in a pickup or van. It is easily transportable because it is hinged at the center.

I cannot ship this because the bridges on the layout are too fragile. If someone wanted it so badly for me to ship, I could ship it but I would have to pack up all the bridges and you would not be able to see it work when you came to pick it up. This would have to be worked out after it is purchased.

Also included is a Red Mountain Mine building and a mountain portal. All the man hours, wood, trains, track, and electronics are worth well into the thousands. I have kept this covered in my garage so that it is in excellent condition. This would make a wonderful hobby for someone who would like to build scenery. I am selling all of it; not just a few trains.

PROTOTYPE HISTORY:
P. T. Barnum would have loved the Triplex. It was an engine of superlatives: more drivers than anything before or since, too big for the shops of its owner, the Erie Railroad, powerful enough to pull a train nearly five miles long. Ninety years ago, in the days before multiple-unit control allowed one throttle to control several locomotives, the Triplex was the ultimate attempt to put as much power as possible in the hands of a single engineer. In the end, it proved a noble, flamboyant, but less-than-successful experiment. Baldwin Locomotive Works built three triplexes between 1914 and 1916 for pusher service on the Erie Railroad's daunting Susquehanna Hill (also known as Gulf Summit) near Deposit, N.Y. The cylinders of the Triplex's middle engine were powered by high pressure steam direct from the boiler, while the front and rear engines used low pressure steam exhausted from the middle cylinders.
Each triplex replaced three ordinary helper engines, and the new locomotives worked well enough to stay on the Erie roster for more than a decade. But the design proved a bit over the top and only one more Triplex was ever built, for the Virginian Railway. Even with their huge boilers, the locomotives could only make enough steam to go 10 mph. One reason was poor draft in the firebox, because only the front cylinders exhausted through the smokebox and created draft; the rear cylinders exhausted through a separate smokestack on the tender. Another inherent problem with the design was that traction from the rear engine decreased as the boiler used coal and water and the tender got lighter.
The M.T.H. Triplex recreates the flamboyance of the original design but runs much better than the prototype ever did. MTH engineering will make this complex model run smoothly and steadily at speeds from a barely perceptible crawl to wide-open throttle. For 2008 the Triplex joins MTH's HO lineup, complete with a full range of engine sounds, puffing smoke, speed control, full Rule 17 lighting, and ready to run under conventional, DCC, or M.T.H. Digital Command System (DCS) control. The Triplex was engineered to haul 640 fifty-ton cars in a train almost five miles long. But the couplers and draft gear of the early twentieth century could not have handled such a load, so the 2-8-8-8-2 was used as a pusher and never put to a full test.

Proto 2000 FM H10-44 NYC #9101 w/ DC/ DCC Sound NEW

By the early 1930s, Fairbanks-Morse was ready to expand its line of diesel prime movers with a new design aimed at railroads. The new Model 38 as it was known used opposed pistons in place of a traditional cylinder head to form the combustion chamber. Although more mechanically complex, it was very smooth running and quiet when properly adjusted. The original six-cylinder 5 x 6" design could generate 300 horsepower; the Milwaukee Road had a single rail car, and the Baltimore & Ohio had two fitted with these engines. Larger eight-cylinder 8 x 10" models soon followed, producing 1,300 horsepower. This version caught the eye of the US Navy, who ordered several for submarines. In 1938, these same engines were selected by the Southern Railway to power five new lightweight rail cars. But further railroad sales were put on hold as the nation entered World War II and the Navy needed every Model 38 it could get. As the war began winding down, F-M was given the OK to build a prototype loco to test civilian applications for the Model 38. On August 21, 1944, F-M rolled out its first H10-44; H for a hood-type car body, 10 for 1000 horsepower and 44 for a B-B (four axles and four traction motors) wheel arrangement. Raymond Lowey designed the body, which featured a gently sloped nose and a rounded roof extending back over the cab. The prototype went to work for the Milwaukee Road, who placed the first large order for 10 in 1945. Some 197 were built through May of 1950 when a 1200-horsepower version (H12-44) was introduced. These models used the same body through 1952. Some H10s and H12s soldiered on into the early 1980s, often working for shortline and industrial users. The first H10 was restored by the Illinois Railway Museum and is still in operation.

Atlas HO Scale EMD GP-40 Canadian National #9309 NIB

In 1966 EMD introduced a new line of locomotives based on the 16-cylinder 645-series prime mover. The “40-series” included a six-axle and four-axle model, the latter being the GP40. A total of 1,145 units were produced between 1966 and 1972. These turbocharged 3,000hp locomotives were used primarily in road freight service. The GP40 was a versatile locomotive that could be found across the US hauling drag freights over mountain passes and leading high-speed intermodal trains across flat terrain. Three rooftop radiator fans at the rear of the long hood differentiate a GP40 from its lower horsepower counterpart, the GP38, which has two fans at this location.
Concurrent with GP40 production, EMD offered a lower horsepower, non-turbocharged locomotive based on the same 645-series prime mover. The four-axle GP38 was rated at 2,000 hp and had the advantage of costing less than the GP40. A total of 727 units were produced between 1966 and 1971 when the model was superseded. The wheelbase of the GP38 was identical to that of the GP40. Both units shared the same EMD road-switcher style body that was introduced with the GP35 in 1963. A desire for standardization caused the GP38 to share the same wheelbase, frame and many external components as the GP40. The GP38 was purchased by large and small roads alike. It was routinely found in local and road freight service throughout the US. Many GP38s and 40s are still in service today.
Options on the Atlas GP38 and GP40 models include a long hood with or without dynamic brakes and an underframe with 2,600 or 3,600 gallon fuel tanks.
Features:
Golden-white LEDs
Realistic die-cast underframe
Five-pole skewed armature motor with dual flywheels for optimum performance at all speeds

Bachmann HO Scale Qinghai-Tibet Railway NJ2 Diesel Loco

The Qinghai-Tibet railway runs for an incredible 960 kilometres over mountains which are over 4,000 meters above sea level. In order to assure that the high level rail railway runs efficiently, powerful locomotives are the main components of reliable operation of the Qinghai-Tibet railway. The locomotives are designed to have special characteristics for running over the severe gradients of the Qinghai-Tibet route. The total length of the second phase of Qinghai-Tibet railway from Gomud to Lhasa is 1142 kilometres. About 550 kilometres of the line were built on frozen earth. The demanding climatic conditions include high elevation, low air pressure, thin air, severe cold, significant temperature changes, strong sandstorms. ect. all add to the complexity of operating this line. At present, the locomotives running on the Qinghai-Tibet railway are "Snowland Ship" NJ2 diesel locomotives which operate alongside new DF 8B and DF 7G locomotives.

Assembling Your Model Train Display

By Victor Epand

Do you know the difference between a toy train and a miniature railway? The perfect display is the answer! By assembling your model train display correctly you will get more positive comments from those who you decide to share it with. Friends and family alike will appreciate the attention to detail that you put into it and the care you exercised when building your display.
After you have decided what model train set you are going to be using and what sort of display you would like then you need to gather together all your building materials. This list of materials will be based on the size of your model train set. You would not want to gather together a bunch of materials just to find out that you have wrongly judged the train layout's relative size so it is best to make sure you know the overall measurements of the finished train set.
To determine this you should actually do a dry fit of your track beside the display that you are adding it to. What this means is that you will place all your track pieces end to end including adding the curves on your display table but do not connect them. This will give you the overall measurements for the track. If you find that you want to build it bigger and smaller then this is the time to add those in so that you do not have to try to add them later.
Once you have decided the best layout for your track you will be ready to attach it into place. For this there are two main options. You can either pin them into place or you can glue them down. Glue is a very stable way of holding the track sections into place however it is not authentic and can sometimes look bad if applied incorrectly. Pins look much better as they can simulate railroad spikes. The only downside is that they can come loose over time so you will have to do a bit of preventative maintenance.
Now that you have decided how you are attaching your track you are ready to do so. If you do decide to go with the gluing method it is advisable to use a few pins here and there to still retain the semblance of realism. If excess glue gets on your tracks you can just wipe it away with a lint free cloth. If you use simple paper towels you can end up with more of a mess than you started with.
Once all the sections of track are in place you just need to give the glue time to set up. Usually overnight will do just fine. If you just used pins then a slight tug on each section will ensure that they are all snugly in place. Next you can do a quick test run of your locomotive. Let it run around the track a few times and see if any part of it threatens to pull loose or is not lined up correctly. Once your locomotive has made the run several times successfully then you should be good to go. Just add your cars to your engine and you are ready to roll.
Victor Epand is an expert consultant for model cars, model trains, and model trucks. You will find excellent hobbying and trading resources here for model car tricks and model train.

BRAND NEW

by WALTHERS

"Empire Builder" Streamlined SP&S- or CB&Q-Owned Car -- P-S Observation (orange, green w/decals)

For portions of its run, the "Empire Builder" traveled on the rails of the Burlington (between Chicago to St. Paul) and the Spokane, Portland & Seattle (between Spokane and Portland), and some of the cars were actually owned by these railroads. All of this equipment was painted and lettered to match the "Empire Builder," but carried small sub lettering for the CB&Q or the SP&S.

Like the prototypes, this series of models is painted to match Walthers "Empire Builder" cars (#932-9031 - 932-9040) making it easy to model a complete, authentic consist. Each includes decals to add your choice of SP&S or CB&Q marks as desired.

Custom Model of RGS 64' Howe Truss Bridge – HOn3

This handcrafted HO wooden bridge is custom built from Rio Grande Southern narrow gauge plans and photos. Bridges of this type were used on the RGS to cross the streams and rivers of Colorado’s high country. This bridge is a great replacement for your non-prototypical 9in (65ft scale) Atlas plastic bridge. Intended for late 1800’s and early 1900’s use, it could also be prototypically correct on a branchline well into the 1950’s. This design is similar to those used by the DRG and DSP&P. This bridge is designed to fit HOn3 Narrow Gauge engines and small standard gauge engines. The internal clearance of this bridge is 2.75in H (70 mm) and 1.8in W (45 mm).

Constructed from scale basswood lumber and featuring Grandt Line nut castings. The trestle measures approximately 9.3in L x 2.8in W (top), 3.5in H. Scale length is 67 feet long and 24 feet high. The wood is weathered gray, and ‘Iron’ parts are weathered as if rusted.

AHM/Rivarossi New York Central Streamlined Hudson 4-6-4

Up for sale is an early edition AHM/Rivarossi NYC Streamlined Dreyfuss Hudson. This is the early edition manufactured around 1972 - '73. Paint, stripes, lettering and numbers are all perfect - no blemishes, fading or scratches. Tender is equipped with the early horn hook type coupler. There are no missing or broken parts, and while bench testing the engine ran strong and smoothly in both directions at all speeds, with working headlamp. The only maintenance needed would be to replace the 2 traction tires on the drivers, as the originals (while still intact) are hard and brittle from age (about 35 years old). Replacing them would enhance pulling preformance and smoothness while running on a layout. Replacements are available at most hobby centers and require only modest technical skill to install. The original box is included and is in very good condition.
